Announced earlier this month at CES 2015, the Asus Zenfone 2 features a 64-bit Intel Atom Z3580 processor and supports up to 4GB LPDDR3 DRAM.
As we previously confirmed on Rambus Press, the Zenfone 2 was the very first smartphone to carry a full payload of 4GB of RAM. Unsurprisingly, a number of manufacturers are eyeing 4GB of RAM for their next-gen smartphones and phablets.
Indeed, Xiaomi’s recently debuted Mi Note Pro packs 4GB of LPDDR4 memory, along with a 5.7-inch 2560 x 1440 display, an 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset and 64GB of internal storage.
Loren Shalinsky, a Strategic Development Director at Rambus, says 4GB of RAM will likely become the new standard for higher-end smartphones and phablets in 2015.
“The Asus Zenfone 2 and Xiaomi’s Mi Note Pro highlight an ongoing trend in the mobile market, with more RAM needed to drive a plethora of new features,” said Loren Shalinsky, a Strategic Development Director at Rambus.
“These include more CPU cores, support for 4K Ultra HD displays, higher (pixel count) quality cameras and increased video encoding rates. All of this translates into a never-ending appetite for more bandwidth. So in addition to packing more RAM, higher-end smartphones will also bolster their memory throughput by upgrading to LPDDR4.”
It should be noted that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy 6 smartphone, which is rumored to feature Qualcomm’s (8-core) Snapdragon 810 chipset, could very well be paired with 4GB of LPDDR4 DRAM and a 4K Ultra HD display.
